If you haven’t read the novel WWZ by Max Brooks I suggest you do, as it is probably the greatest Zombie Fiction ever written (in my humble opinion of course). March 19, 2004 saw the release of Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead, a reimagining of George Romero’s classic zombie film of the same name. Dawn of the Dead 2004, is easily one of the best zombie films ever produced or remade, in my opinion ofcourse. It sits in the top 5 of my all time favorite horror films. From the tense opening sequences to the frantic escape at the crossroads mall, Dawn of the Dead is a near perfect example of how a classic film should be remade. The acting was superb, the fx were excellent and the score was spot on. Dawn of the Dead is full of zombie mayhem and gut munching goodness, pleasing to any fan of the genre. I know the die-hards and remake haters out there bitch about every film that is redone (and in alot of cases, butchered) but I think most people would be hard pressed to find to many flaws with this film. Gallowwalker – Trailer for Wesley Snipes Zombie Western

I found myself wondering today, “Where in the hell is Wesley Snipes“? Don’t ask why. My brain shorts out sometimes. So I google’d him this morning and came up with this. A lackluster trailer for a Zombie Western featuring a very “Blade” like character. I was never really a big fan of snipes so I don’t think I will be rushing to see this one anytime soon (though Zombies always obsure my better judgement). Zombie Lake A.K.A “AquaZombieVampires From Physics Defying Lake/Pool vs. The Strange BuggedEyed Mayor in the Castle Down the Road”

……I cannot believe that I sat through this movie literally glued to the tube??!! But I was; and more so, I had to pee the entire time, and just could get up to head to the bathroom!!!!! The twist; the turns; the boobs, and the 70’s unshaven volleyball/basketball girlies only would sway me to give this flick a 9 outta 10, but it wasn’t that at all! I want to cling a glass with the editing team!! Their lack of compassion, heart, drive, and film education really put the film in a league of it’s own…. I mean lets face it, the cut-away’s, disappearing in an instant zombies in the lake, the pool walls and store bought aquarium plants really added some flare to the lake/pool scenes!! I couldn’t wrap my head around the zombies reaching up from the depths of the lake/pool when the teenieboppers were frolicking knee deep at the shore. I flunked high school physics, but my keen sense of this ain’t fucking rightness kicked into overdrive when the girls were swimming in about 10feet of crystal clear water at the very same time they were knee deep in what seemed to be the most disgusting lake I have every seen!!!

I strongly recommend reading World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War before this flick comes out; it is by far the best zombie fiction written (an I’ve read a ton of it), in my humble opinion ofcourse. Can Pitt and $125 million budget pull it off? I hope so, this thing can go two ways, absolute shit or amazing adaptation, hopefully its the latter. Can’t wait for this. The Mulbury Project

Honestly I’m in love with anything that mixes horror and sci-fi; be it games, movies, books, tv series, cosplay chicks, you name it. Add to that a few elements of PA (post apocalyptic for the laymen) and I’m all over that shit. While surfing Youtube this morn for more obscure and less obscure horror trailers I stumbled across this interesting trailer by the guys who co-wrote Hitman Absolution (ya the game), Martin Brennan and Michael B. Jackson. I couldn’t really find to much information on The Mulbury Project other than a FB page and some trailers scattered here and there, but what I do know is that the trailer looks pretty cool and so do the concept pics. Slated for release sometime in 2013 (lets hope so), I’m watching it! The Mulbury Project on Facecrack.

Heidi DJs at the local radio station, and together with the two Hermans (Whitey and Munster) forms part of the ‘Big H Radio Team’. As Heidi and Whitey play the Lords’ record, it starts to play backwards, and Heidi experiences a flashback to a past trauma. Later, Whitey plays the Lords’ record, dubbing them the Lords of Salem, and to his surprise, the record plays normally and is a massive hit with listeners. Resident Evil: Retribution

Resident Evil Retribution begins immediately after its predecessor, Afterlife. Exploding onto the screen in a heavily cgi’d battle scene done in reverse slow motion as is the usual style of Anderson and the Resident Evil Franchise. Heavy on the pleather clad Milla (not so bad), heavy on the bullet time and heavy on the cgi; the films remind me of a video game trailer. Yeah. I liked Resident Evil 1, hated Apocalypse (2), liked Extinction (3) and tolerated Afterlife; so really not a bad series overall (yeah yeah I know, you either like em or hate em). Did I like Retribution? Well I do like zombies, hot tightly clothed women gunfighting, post apocalyptic settings and action flicks; but this whole thing just felt like I was watching someone playing a video game. Really. One dimensional characters fighting one dimensional zombies in front of a green screen. It was just tiring and overplayed. Glossy not gritty. There were a few cool moments (cool Russian commie zombies), but having seen those same stylistic gun fights played out four times previous, it lost its edge. I don’t even know what genre this is? Milla promo shots, Resident Evil game marketing video or a really long action film trailer? Who knows! Resident Evil: Retribution @ IMDb.

Gametime: ZombiU

ZombiU. 2012.

ZombiU is a first-person survival horror game set in London, in which the player assumes the role of a random survivor in a zombie apocalypse. The player collects various items and weapons, used to fight and kill zombies, that are located or looted from different areas. If the player’s character is killed by a zombie, which can occur with a single bite, the character will permanently die and the player will then take the role of another random survivor. The previous character will become a zombie, who the player must kill in order to reclaim his original inventory.

I ended up buying my rugrats the new Wii U console for christmas this year, cuz ya know they gotta keep up with the latest techno gadgetry. With available titles including the steadfast Mario, Just Dance and Sonic titles I am just not that into the Wii (I have both); I’m a PS3 guy. So I decided to pick up ZombiU, a little treat for myself. Was I in for a blood soaked, fear inducing surprise. Right from the frantic introduction run through a horde of blood thirsty zombies the player is thrown into a desolate destroyed world filled with the undead. Every misstep is death, every miscalculation is death around every corner is death. Literally. If you plan poorly or try to go in guns blazing your zombie food; and when that happens you start over as a new survivor and might end up running into your zombified old character hungry for your flesh (very cool aspect of the game). Whether it’s scrounging for supplies, stockpiling your safe house or barricading yourself against the undead every decision is life or death. There are some truly terrifying moments in the game which are brought to life by the eerie score and the true feeling of lone desperation. The Wii U gamepad truly shines in this game, using for things like realtime maps, inventory switching, black-light scanning and sniper scoping makes for a truly immersive apocalyptic joyride. ZombiU isn’t your typical run through the hordes of zombies blasting away in a haze of blood drenched lead. It’s quite the contrary actually, high tension realism is the name of the game here. Its easy to die and ammo is hard to come by. I don’t remember playing a game that made me sweat with fear (well Doom 3 did) like this does. If your into real bone chilling survival horror, check it out.

Apparently this is a UK based remake of the original Romero classic. IMDB states that the budget for this flick is estimated at 50k pounds…..that is troubling. I enjoy remakes (ya I know……I’m not one of the haters) but I really don’t see any reason to butcher NOTLD yet again.  Two is enough.  Actually you know what ?   Slap a 50 million pound budget on this thing, attach Michael Bay to direct and produce; viola there’s your remake.  If your going to butcher something, butcher it right!  Anyway check the trailer…….yikes!

I can’t resist watching movies involving zombies, zombie apocalpyse’, zombie outbreaks and general gut munching mayhem! With the not-so recent upward trend of all things undead (damn you Twilight, damn you Plants vs Zombies, damn you Call of Duty: Zombies) there has been a plethora of entries into the genre. Quasi Zombie films such as the 28 days franchise, the upcoming World War Z film adaptation by Pitt and company, the excellent Dawn of the Dead remake by Zack Snyder (I don’t care…the Dawn remake is far superior to Romero’s original), the UK zombedy Shaun of the Dead and the phenomenal Walking Dead TV series have set the bar high for genre fans such as myself. Unfortunately the current global fascination of all things Zombie has led to a massive influx of poorly executed and well….extremely bad films into the overly saturated subgenre. So for the discerning Zombie enthusiast it’s really about finding the diamonds in the rough, so to speak. This brings me to the film at hand. Zombie Apocalypse: Redemption; a so-called sequel to the lackluster Zombie Apocalypse (you know, the one starring Ving Rhames. Oh you don’t know).

Lets get to the meat of this thing: It’s 12 years after a global virus transformed the population of earth into flesh eating Zombies. The undead outnumber the humans 10000 to 1. I don’t like those odds! The general breakdown of society has already taken place separating the good from the bad, the groups who want to re-establish a functioning society from the badass rebels who want nothing more than to capture women for sex slavery, to drink and to assemble themselves into some form of quasi-military-roman republic-Fallout New Vegas style raider organization. Fair enough. I for one would tend to lean towards the latter. Now for a $56,000 budget you can’t expect to much, can you? I think you can expect a little bit of common sense and thought. Would everyone in a crumbling broken world overrun with the undead be driving spotless brand new vehicles? Or be dressed in combat gear with not as much as a spot of dirt or stain to be seen anywhere? I guess they had to return alot of that gear after shooting wrapped up. Needless to say that gasoline would be so deteriorated after 12 years that driving anything but a horse would be impossible. I think by this point I had figured out what they spent their budget on. Car rentals and rollback clothing at Wal-Mart. This brings me to the “evil” raiders group and the laughable villain overlord, Roman. This dude had a few things right, he likes to get messed up and he likes his sex slaves dressed in the latest BDSM fashions (brand spanking shiny new btw). I could overlook his horrendous overacting, his confused moments where he stares of into space for no apparent reason and even his sex toy girlfriend who was clearly cast as a Mexican but struggled horribly with her attempts at an accent; making her sound half-Russian mixed with a bit of French and Eastern European. What I couldn’t get over was his costume. Imagine a hockey player crossed with Shredder from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Sigh. I really hope these guys weren’t trying to make anything serious here.

There were two things I half-enjoyed about Zombie Apocalypse: Redemption; the 80’s ish synth soundtrack (I’m a sucker for synth) and the leather clad bdsm style catfight between the two main females during the “climax”. Oh and you might recognize Fred Williamson (the leader of the of the “good” guys) former Kansas City Chiefs football star, blaxploitation mainstay and more recently he appeared in Dusk Till Dawn. The film was tiring, boring, uninteresting, comedic, pointless, inaccurate, exhausting, not even mediocre and generally a waste of F#$k’n time. I only hope that by taking time off of their day job’s at Burger King and Wal-Mart they didn’t lose to much in wages……Zombie Apocalypse: Redemption @ IMDB.
